Fair Injustice...bold concept in literature
This story will scare the hell out you...read it once, read it twice. A well written, almost poetic style that does not mince words, it's almost like looking in the mirror...sometimes you won't like what you see. Anyone with at a least a modicum of patriotism and fairness will enjoy this book. A good read, fast paced and down to earth. It is not for everybody...(... very graphic, but not vulgar...) Hope to see more from this author....

eye opener!
Very fast read. I enjoyed the story and characters...very descriptive!! Almost like being there. When this book gets discovered, will be best seller! The reality is frightening, but very entertaining. I like the style.

The First Strange Place: Race and Sex in World War II Hawaii

Average review score:

WW2 in Hawaii: heroes and hell-raisers
SUMMARY: facts and interpretation of the effects of WW2 in Hawaii

REVIEW: The authors interviewed many people, including my father, Anthony Capanna, as they wrote this account of WW2 in Hawaii. Although I think their account is quite accurate (and was grateful they depicted my father as the good/honest/moral person he is), there are parts of the book that are quite graphic as pertaining to the sleazier side of what went on after Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Factual, yes; worth reading, if you need it as a research tool; a bit jolting and base...yes. I don't recommend it for young people.

Great research and a fascinating, beautifully written book
This book is the best ever done on the WWII scene in the Islands. The research is exhaustive, and the stories extremely well-told. I am a historian and author in Hawai'i--concentrating on the 19th century but well aware of the 20th--and the authors have done a great job of not only telling the stories but coming to the correct conclusions. The two chapters on Black soldiers and the sex trade are especially good.

The title refers to the idea that Hawai'i, with very different foods, traditions and most of its population Oriental and Polynesian, was the first strange place that most young servicemen ever encountered. On their way to fight Japanese, they are stationed on an island with more than a third of the population of Japanese ancestory.

If you want an insight as to the impact of suddenly tripling the population of an island, primarily with young fighting men, this is the book. It's a GREAT read, and it all happened!

History of Japan, 1334-1615
Published in Paperback by Stanford Univ Pr (September, 1991)
Author: George Bailey Sansom
Average review score:

Best affordable introduction to Japanese history
Pretty much every English speaker who studies Japan acquires a copy of Sansom. Consequently, if you are interested in Japan, you probably already have a set. I am giving this collection four stars instead of five simply because its scholarship is now a bit dated and it is not the Cambridge History of Japan. But, who can afford the Cambridge History? I wish I could. In terms of being affordable, this is most likely still the best introduction to Japanese history around in English.

A must-read in order to understand Japanese history.
The period from the split of the nation into two dynasties (north and south) to the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo (modern day Tokyo) is often overlooked in Western studies of Japanese history. Sansom, in contrast, devoted an entire book to the subject, and rightfully so. The complexity of these times may be a turn-off to casual readers or people with only a minor interest in Japanese history, but for those that wish to start on a journey into the heart of one of the greatest turning points of Japanese history, as well as get a glimps at the starts of the tea ceremony and many other aspects which have become part of that which is "Japan" should hold this book, even as a reference.

Hortus Third : A Concise Dictionary of Plants Cultivated in the United States and Canada
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (01 November, 1976)
Author: Bailey Hortorium
Average review score:

One of the most important reference books I own.
Hortus Third isn't perfect. I wish it had more drawings and I wish it included more non-cultivated plants.
That said, Hortus Third is probably the most important garden/botany reference book I own. I am a professional garden writer & speaker (author of Allergy-Free Gardening) and Hortus is one book I turn to almost daily. I now and then do find some things in it that I don't completely agree with, but by and large it is very accurate.
Hortus is an expensive book, and not really one for the casual gardener, but for those whose interest is deep, it is worth the money--and then some.
My own copy of Hortus Third is pretty well dog-eared by now from so much use. I have given it only 4 stars as a rating, and that is because I, like many, wish it included more natives, but still, there is no other book quite like it and it is a very useful, important reference that I simply could not do without.

The BEST plant book available!
If you're *seriously* interested in plants (i.e., a plant "nerd")and love learning about the technicalities of plant families, similarities, differences, etc., then this book is for you. It's not for wimps! It's fascinating to study, and a great read if plants are your world.

Job Interviews Made Easy
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (April, 1995)
Authors: Patty Marler, Jan Bailey Mattia, and Patty Morler
Average review score:

Great Overview of Interviews
This short, concise book describes types of interviews, how to prepare for them, the stages of interviews, how to follow up, and how to handle job offers. The recommendations apply to competitive interviews where the employer is hiring for a known vacancy. The print is large and there is a lot of white space.

This review is adapted from the Annotated Bibliography of Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding A Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Dyslexia

EXCELLENT!!!!! Very Helpful!
This is an excellent guide with the helpful hints for the most frequently asked questions. My interviewer asked me at least half of the questions covered in the book. It also gives 2 scenarios and explains what the person did good and bad in each. It really put me at ease. Great for anyone just starting the interviewing process.

Kitty & Virgil
Published in Paperback by Plume (05 June, 2001)
Author: Paul Bailey

The Past Casts a Mighty Shadow
Have you ever met someone and felt that you've known each other for a long time? That's how I felt about Kitty (this book's heroine). And like Kitty, I fell in love with Virgil and her quirky father. Just like Kitty, there is something mysterious about Virgil that I can't put my finger on. He's got a looming past in Romania, and Kitty has her dysfuntional family to deal with.

Anyway, at times this book will jerk a tear, or erupt a laugh. I enjoyed my time with Virgil and wish it could have gone on another 200 pages!

Unlikely Lovers
Readers not familiar with the works of English author PaulBailey should treat themselves to a few hours with this perspicaciousand highly original writer. His first novel, At The Jerusalem, captured three British awards; he has been cited by the American Academy of Arts and Letters; and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1980 and 1986. Mr. Bailey's initial United States publication, Gabriel's Lament (1987), traces the life of a young man who is systematically abused by his father and winds up eventually exposing his father's misdeeds in a book. Kitty And Virgil, the author's first novel in seven years, deals with misdeeds of another sort - those perpetrated under the Romanian regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. Kitty Crozier is an identical twin whose sister, Daisy, was a bit of a hellion as a child but has now morphed into complaining adulthood. An employee of London publishers, Kitty first sees Virgil Florescu through sedative drowsed eyes from her hospital bed. She notices there is "a glint of something like silver in his smile." They meet again in Green Park where Virgil is employed as a grounds keeper "picking up litter from the grass with a long spike." Eventually, she invites him to her home, and thus begins one of the most unique love affairs in literature. A tragicomic figure, a refugee and poet from Romania, Virgil escaped the tyranny of his home country by swimming the Danube, first to the border, then to Italy, where "he had slept in fields, washed in streams. Virgil is surely one of the author's finest creations, imbued with self-knowledge, a splendid, effervescent joy, and brio. However, Virgil is plagued by thoughts of his father who committed heinous crimes during wartime - the barbarous slaying of Romanian Jews during World War II. Somehow Virgil feels he must make reparation for these acts. On the other hand, Kitty's father is an aging, ridiculous dandy who once worked as a male model, married well several times, and now shares lodgings with an acerbic butler. Dialogue in the hands of Paul Bailey takes effervescent life, especially in the scenes during which Kitty takes Virgil to meet her father. The comparison between Kitty's father and Virgil's is eloquence itself. Presenting pathos, parody and humor in one slim volume could not have been accomplished save by an author with Mr. Bailey's gifts. Kitty And Virgil heightens awareness, disturbs, and entertains. It is one more star in Paul Bailey's crown. END

Life and Times of Ann Bailey
Published in Paperback by Marketing+Design Group (31 October, 1998)
Author: Virgil A. Lewis
Average review score:

An Accurate Historical Overview
I thourougly enjoyed this book. The content is certainly not compromised by its small size. I am a college student and a history minor and this book is very accurate. It begins with a short history of colonial women and then delves into Ann Bailey's life. Lewis keeps the book interesting by including personal accounts and interviews with people who knew Ann Bailey. He also includes poems that were written about her. There are even maps in the back of the book. This book was written over a hundred years ago and that could have made it drab or dry, but this book was lively and full of great detail. Lewis is fantastic about using lots of vivid imagery and beautiful language to keep the reader drawn in. I highly recommend this book for reports or for anyone who is interested in learning more about Ann Bailey, or what life was like for colonial women.

Pioneer Woman Ahead of Her Time
I thoroughly enjoyed this book... more from the aspect that this was written by an author who interviewed acquaintences of Ms. Bailey. As a parent I find it surprising just what her mother took her to witness at the age of five; I get shivers thinking about putting my children through that. And yet, times are very different socially, even from the time the book was written. (It was very amusing reading the author's perspective on the fact that Ann Bailey liked to knock one back once in a while.) I had searched and searched for information about Ann Bailey and was very happy to find this book. I was especially happy that the publisher actually packaged two books into one. A delightful book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about strong-willed women, to anyone who likes to read antique books and smile at the social perspective of the author, and to anyone who is a fan of early pioneer history in the Ohio Valley.
